Advanced Energy Materials Top 40 for August 10, 2012

Welcome to the first instalment of the Advanced Energy Materials Top 40 list! Our inaugural Top Three papers are:

At number 1, René Janssen, Paul Blom, Jan Hummelen and collaborators have explored quantum effects in BHJ solar cells and how the electronic structure of the photoactive blend affects the open-circuit voltage and the short-circuit current and provide a simple formula for efficient charge generation.

In the recently published special issue on battery materials Kisuk Kang, Gerbrand Cedar and coworkers provide a critical review of electrode materials for sodium ion batteries, which comes in at number 2, with particular focus on the viability of sodium-based alternatives to lithium in the interest of using abundant elements for large-scale energy storage.

Conversely, third place this week has Jun Chen and colleagues reviewing organic electrode materials with respect to their potential for improving lithium ion batteries in performance as well as cost or environmental impact.

In terms of fascinating new flow-based concepts for energy storage, two other papers are particularly noteworthy: Yury Gogotsi’s research team has explored an electrochemical flow capacitor concept (#5) preceded by a seminal paper from Yet-Ming Chiang’s group at MIT that presented a semi-solid flow battery (#20).
