The second half-century of physica status solidi has started, and we look back on a successful 50th anniversary year. Many top articles were published last year, a limited selection of which is assembled in this special edition – the “Best of pss 2011“. The topical spectrum of the papers ranges from scanning tunneling microscopy on graphene (the title story) through photovoltaics, lasers, oxide materials and devices, and lithium ion batteries to superconductors and diamond biosensors. You can enjoy reading this collection online, but you can also grab your personal print copy at one of the forthcoming scientific spring meetings of the DPG, APS, MRS, and E-MRS, or request one directly from the editorial office by e-mail.
