One of the most sought-after discoveries in the field of electo-optics is the discovery of the fluid ferroelectric nematic phase, as it is expected to to respond far better to an external electric field than the currently used ferroelectric smectic liquid crystals. Now, Professor Oriano Francescangeli and co-workers have developed a novel nematic phase exhibiting a ferroelectric response with an apparent connection to field-inducted biaxility, in work representing significant progress towards electric-field-alignable ferroelectric fluids.
Their work has been featured as an ESRF "spotlight on science" article; you can read this article here.
