Microfluidics have been used to prepare monodisperse, micrometer-scale liquid crystalline elastomer beads in which mesogens form a monodomain. Dramatic shape changes, up to 70%, that accompany phase transitions mean these beads can be employed as actuators for nanomechanical and nanorobotic applications.
